It was Ashley's birthday and Melanie gave him a surprise reception that night. Everyone
knew about the reception, except Ashley. Even his children knew. Everyone in the town
who was nice was invited. General Gordon and his family graciously accepted the invitation.
Alexander Stephens said he would be present if his ever-uncertain health permited. Scarlett
never saw Melanie so excited or so happy.
"You see, dear, Ashley hadn’t a birthday party since we had come here. And he was working so hard
and he was so tired. When he got home at night he was surprised when everybody came in!"
Melanie's house was blazing lights from every room. It was packed with guests. They overflowed
on verandas and many were sitting on the benches in the dim lantern-hung yard.
